Introduction to Sexual Health

The aim this session is to develop knowledge and awareness of sexual health and HIV prevention, including the latest evidence-based strategies for reducing transmission, effective HIV testing, and the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This course will equip participants to confidently advise, support, and signpost individuals on sexual health and HIV prevention, with a strong emphasis on current UK guidelines, person-centred care, and reducing stigma. 

This course is designed for all healthcare professionals working in primary care, community settings, or specialist sexual health services, including GPs, nurses, pharmacists, health advisors, and allied health professionals. It is also suitable for students and trainees in healthcare programmes who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in sexual health and HIV prevention.

Course Description

By the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to: 
 

  1. Identify the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, and genital warts, and describe their typical presentation and risk factors.​ 

  1. Explain current treatment protocols and prevention strategies for each major STI, including the use of antibiotics, partner notification, and public health interventions.​ 

  1. Apply knowledge of STI management and prevention to support informed decision-making and effective communication in sexual health consultations.​ 

  1. Recognise the importance of stigma reduction, cultural competence, and timely referral pathways in delivering comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention care.​
