Introduction to Contraception and Family Planning

This course aims to develop knowledge and awareness of contraception and family planning, with a focus on the full range of options available, including long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) such as the coil (IUD/IUS) and the contraceptive implant. This will enable participants to confidently advise the public on effective contraceptive choices and support informed decision-making in line with national guidelines. 

This one-day training is designed for all healthcare professionals, including those working in community, primary care, or mental health settings, and students enrolled in health-related programmes.

Course Description

By the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:   

  1. Describe the main methods of contraception and their mechanisms of action. 

 

  1. Recognise contraindications, side effects, and considerations influencing contraceptive choice. 

 

  1. Apply knowledge to support informed decision-making and person-centred contraceptive counselling. 

 

  1. Identify national guidance and local service pathways for referral and follow-up.
