Medicine Administration to Children and Young People

The safe administration of medicines to children and young people (CYP) is a complex and high‑risk area of healthcare practice that requires specialist knowledge, sound clinical judgement, and a strong commitment to patient safety. Children are particularly vulnerable to medicines errors due to factors such as weight‑based dosing, developmental variations, communication challenges, and reliance on adults for advocacy and care. As a result, professionals and carers involved in paediatric medicines administration must maintain up‑to‑date competence and a clear understanding of their responsibilities.

This programme has been designed to support healthcare professionals and carers who administer medicines to infants, children, and adolescents across a range of care settings. Through engagement with this programme, learners are encouraged to develop safe, reflective, and family‑centred approaches to medicines administration. Emphasis is placed on risk reduction, effective communication with children and families, safeguarding responsibilities, and escalation of concerns.
