Improving Physical Health in Severe Mental Illness

This session aims to address the physical health needs of people with mental illness by increasing your awareness to consider these needs opportunistically and to deliver physical health checks to this patient group. 

This one-day training will be of interest to all healthcare professionals, including students on any health programmes, mental health professionals working in inpatient and community settings with service users, and anyone with a special interest in improving physical health needs in severe mental illness (SMI).

  1. Describe epidemiology related to poor physical health in SMI 

  1. Identify the common physical/medical problems in SMI 

  1. Examine factors behind poor physical health needs in SMI 

  1. Describe the process/activities of conducting physical health assessment in SMI 

  1. Outline the mandatory physical health checks/monitoring conducted in the SMI population (6\12 monthly checks) 

  1. Develop and understand your role in physical health monitoring
