Course Description

The Tudor Thames explores the history of Tudor and Elizabethan England through the landscapes, communities and waterways that shaped the period. Taking the River Thames as its central theme, the course examines how geography influenced power, politics, religion, trade and everyday life during a time of significant social and cultural change. 

Through a blend of expert-led teaching, discussion and place-based learning, you will investigate the role of the river as a vital connection between royal courts, commercial activity and local communities. Alongside major historical events, this course also highlights the experiences of ordinary people and how they lived, worked and moved through the Tudor world. 

By the end of the course, you will have gained a richer understanding of Tudor society and a fresh perspective on the enduring influence of the Thames in shaping England's history.
