Introduction to Music Therapy

Online Day Workshop | Roehampton University

This interactive online workshop introduces the core theoretical principles and clinical practice of music therapy. Combining theoretical understanding with experiential work, the day offers an exploration into how musical structure and creative expression offer space for self-awareness, opening pathways for the therapeutic process. We examine fundamental psychodynamic concepts, including Winnicott’s holding environment, potential space, and the dynamics of musical attunement.

Throughout the workshop, we consider the role of the music therapist. We explore why personal reflection and self-awareness are essential for practitioners, looking at how a therapist holds space safely to support growth and navigate group dynamics.

Improvisation is a key element in this clinical approach. We discuss how musical frameworks help create and gradually decode the unique sound language of an individual or a group.

Learning across the day is deeply experiential, centered on open group discussions, active improvisation, and clinical songwriting. We explore how improvisation and songwriting serve as tools for emotional processing and release.

Designed as an open, collaborative space, this workshop provides an introduction for anyone considering postgraduate study, expanding their knowledge in music therapy, or exploring the MA Music Therapy pathway at Roehampton University.
