Course Description

The Marschak Interaction Method (MIM) is a structured technique for observing and assessing the overall quality and nature of relationships between caregivers and child. It consists of a series of simple tasks designed to elicit behaviors in four primary dimensions in order to evaluate the caregivers' capacity to:

The MIM takes from 30 to 60 minutes and is usually videotaped. There are sets of tasks designed to be used in each of four age groups: infant, toddler, pre-school/school age, and adolescent. There are also versions for pregnancy, families and couples. This training focuses mainly on the Parent-Child MIM. Materials needed to perform the tasks are simple and readily available (such as blocks, squeaky toys, drawing paper)

D-EIS is a scoring system developed for quantitative rating of the MIM observations. It can be used together with more qualitative rating forms for more psychometric evaluation. The international reliability and validity studies for D-EIS are presented in the course.

The learning objectives are:

Knowledge of how to administer/interpret the Parent-Child MIM using D-EIS rating scales, and qualitative scalesKnowledge of how to provide reflective feedback to the parents/caregiversSkill development in writing MIM reports.
